Requirements and install

Gift Cards installs like every other extension sold here. Follow the shared procedure rather than a Gift Cards-specific one:

Your OpenCart has to still have gift vouchers

Gift Cards runs on the OpenCart 4.0.2.x line and refuses to install above it. OpenCart removed the gift voucher feature outright in 4.1.0.0 (the tables, the admin screens and the checkout box are all gone), and this extension works on top of that feature rather than replacing it.

If you install it on 4.1 or above, nothing happens except a line in the log saying why. Your store is not changed. Which OpenCart releases this runs on explains what it checks and why the answer is a refusal rather than a warning.

What is specific to Gift Cards

The permission entries to tick at step 3 of the shared procedure are:

extension/gift_cards/module/gift_cards
extension/gift_cards/report/gift_cards

Tick both under Access Permission and Modify Permission, for every user group that should be allowed to use Gift Cards.

The second one is the outstanding-liability report. Installing the module grants it to your own user group automatically, so you will not need it for yourself. Tick it for anybody else who should see the report. OpenCart shows a report only with the permission and its setting, so a group without this entry finds the report missing rather than refused.

Two screens beside it have entries of their own:

extension/gift_cards/customer/personal_data
extension/gift_cards/customer/purge
  • Personal Data, under Customers, looks up, exports and erases what Gift Cards holds about one person. Opening it needs Access on its entry; doing anything on it needs Modify on OpenCart's own customer/customer, the permission that already lets somebody edit a customer.
  • Remove everything held about a person, linked from Gift Cards' own settings screen, needs Access and Modify on its own entry, and the link is absent for a group that cannot open it. What it holds is on what this holds about a person.

Installing grants both to your own user group, the one you install with. Any other group has to be ticked by hand, once.

After installing

Gift Cards installs switched off, the way everything here does, so that putting it on the store changes nothing until you have looked at the settings. Then, in order:

  1. Switch the module on in Extensions → Extensions → Modules.
  2. Open its settings and decide the validity period. It starts at 0, which means cards get no expiry date at all, so until you change it, Gift Cards is installed and doing nothing to your cards. That is deliberate: see quick start.

The outstanding-liability report is registered and switched on by the install, so it appears under Reports → Reports straight away. It reads cards you already sold, so it has something to say before you have configured anything.
