Troubleshooting

If Product Search will not open at all (a blank page, or a bounce back to the dashboard), that is an install problem rather than a Product Search one. See troubleshooting an install; it is nearly always the permission step, and the fix is nearly always to log out and back in.

Whatever the symptom, Product Search wrote down what it did and what it refused to do, in a file your own admin downloads in one click. See what Kyvero extensions log.

Everything below is about a Product Search that opens.

The storefront search has not changed

Check, in this order:

  1. Status is on, on the Settings tab. Enabling the module in OpenCart's extension list does not switch searching on. That is a separate decision, and it is off until you make it. On a multi-store install Status is per store: pick the storefront in the Store box at the top of the screen and check it there.
  2. You are on 4.0.2.0 or later. Below that the extension installs nothing at all, and its own screen says so at the top, naming your version.
  3. You are searching. Product Search answers the search results page only. Category pages, brand pages and the menu's product counts are OpenCart's, untouched, by design.
  4. Your theme's search box posts to OpenCart's own search route. A theme that has replaced search with something of its own is not going through the events this extension listens on.

A synonym group does not fire

  • Check the language. A group belongs to one language, and a group authored in English does nothing to a German search.
  • Check its status box. An unticked group is stored and inert.
  • Check the other word is in the group. Terms stand in for each other, so both spellings have to be on the list. A group holding only sweater widens nothing.
  • Remember what a synonym does not do. It makes one word mean another; it does not make a product match a word that neither the product nor any of its synonyms says.

A merchandising rule does not fire

  • The keyword is the whole search, not a word of it. A rule on gift fires on a search for gift and not on gift set. Word order matters too.
  • The shopper has sorted the results. Pins apply only under the default sort, on purpose. Reset the sort control and search again.
  • The product is not one that shopper may see. A disabled product, one in another store, or one whose date available is in the future is not shown by a rule. A rule pins products; it does not override visibility.
  • The shopper narrowed the search to a category the pinned product is not in.
  • The rule's status is set to Disabled.

Save refused, and the settings did not change

The synonym groups and the settings are stored by one Save, so a group the screen refuses stops the settings being written too. Open the Synonyms tab: the row in error carries its message. A group needs between 2 and 20 terms and a language, and a term may be in only one group per language.

A misspelling is not corrected

  • The search found something. Correction runs only when a search comes back with nothing at all, so a search returning three wrong products is never widened.
  • The word is shorter than four characters, or the first two characters are wrong. labtop corrects; ablatop does not.
  • It is a product code. Codes are never corrected. XR2000 and XR2001 are one edit apart and are different products.
  • The right spelling is not in your catalogue. Corrections come from your own product, brand and category names and your synonym terms, not from a dictionary of English.
  • It is switched off for that language. The setting is answered per language.

The report is empty

  • Count Searches has to be on, and it only counts from the moment you switch it on. There is no backfill: OpenCart's own search log holds different data and is not read.
  • Check the store and language selectors. Counters are kept per store and per language, and the report shows one of each at a time.
  • Check the date range. It defaults to the last 30 days, or to what Report opens on says on the Settings tab.
  • Check the retention window. Days older than it are thrown away when you open the report.

A term I fixed has vanished from the zero-result list

That is the report working. It lists terms that came back with nothing, so a term your synonym group or your pins now answer is no longer one of them. The counters for it are still there: untick the zero-result filter and it is on the list with the rest.

Something else

The extension changes what a search matches and nothing else: it does not touch prices, stock, categories or your theme. If what you are seeing is a price or a product rendering oddly on a results page, check whether it does the same with Status switched off before assuming this is the cause. That switch is the whole of the extension's involvement, and flipping it is instant and reversible.
